We’re here in Cagli after a full day and a half of travel woes and successes, and a day of sightseeing in Rome’s historic center. It seems like the beginning of these overseas stories always are filled with travel problems. This time, as opposed to the Marquette team’s India adventure earlier this year, we are all at the destination despite everything.
The trip over was an example of magnets picking up iron filings. I traveled along with faculty member Carole Burns from Chicago to Rome. We started with one student traveling along with us from Milwaukee, picked up five more at O’Hare Airport, another on the plane, two more while waiting for luggage, another whose plane from New York was ten minutes later, two more while we were boarding the train from the airport to Rome (it was so close that they, and Carole, boarded the train without tickets). There were five more waiting at the airport. The rest of the group of 24 straggled in one or two at a time.
One student missed her plane so she arrived in the middle of Sunday’s tour. One of the faculty members had picked her up at the airport. Students are from Marquette, Indiana, Auburn, Gonzaga, and Wilkes.
The first day ended with a joint dinner.
