A walk that brought us closer to Heaven, literally

We took a hike the other day to a Capuchin monastery atop a mountain at the edge of town. And I do mean atop a mountain. I have no photos from the walk up because I was gasping the entire time and way too out of breath to take pictures.

But when we arrived, we were greeted with wonderful hospitality, led on a tour (note the photos of frescos and paintings), allowed into the library once used by monks to copy books by hand and now housing books dating back to before Guttenberg invented movable type – that’s the abbot in one of the photos holding a manuscript from the 11th century –  and allowed into the monastery’s gardens overlooking the city.

It almost made the walk up the mountain worthwhile.  Almost.
